Project M300 Reforestation Strengthening the livelihoods of the local communities ALL PROJECTS 01 Context Madagascar is severely affected by climate change, with 80 per cent of the population living in poverty. A lack of infrastructure and low purchasing power lead to the over-exploitation of natural resources. The greatest threat to the environment and biodiversity lies in the disappearance of forests, caused by bushfires, charcoal production, and logging. Furthermore, large-scale destruction caused by grazing fires associated with livestock farming leads to significant problems. This environmental destruction threatens both the livelihoods of Madagascar’s growing population and the existence of globally unique ecosystems. 02 Executive Summary Through its reforestation project, ADES is tackling Madagascar’s key challenges – deforestation, poverty, unemployment and food insecurity. Since the project began in 2019, over 1,300,000 trees have been planted, covering more than 500 hectares of forest. The project promotes environmental sustainability, economic development, and education. It ensures improved food security, greater biodiversity, and better water retention, whilst preventing further soil erosion. The jobs created also provide a source of income for the local population. The reforestation project is carried out annually. 03 Outcomes Through the project, rural households and community groups develop a sound understanding of environmental issues and integrate this into their daily lives, where they pass it on to others. The aim is to contribute to long-term social change, in which the protection of natural resources, a mindful approach to the environment, and an understanding of ecological interdependencies become an integral part of people’s thinking and actions. In doing so, reforestation areas are to be secured on a permanent basis. Timeline The project is scheduled to run from August 2026 to July 2028 and forms part of a long-term commitment running until 2030.
